In reply to the above question here is a section from my short paper on the Copernican Revolution.
NOTES:
"The church says that the earth is flat, but I know it is round, for I have seen the shadow on the moon, and I have more faith in a shadow than in the church."
Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) Statements occur throughout the Bible declaring the earth to be flat motionless and at the center of a simple three layered universe with hell below and heaven above. There are far too many to list them all here, however, some of the more obvious references follow:
The earth is fixed and motionless:
1 Chron. 16:30 "He fixed the earth firm and immovable."
Psalm 93:1 "Thou fixed the earth immovable and firm..."
Psalm 96:10 "He has fixed the earth firm, immovable..."
Psalm 104:5 "Thou didst fix the earth on its foundation so that it can never be shaken."
Isaiah 45:18 "...who made the earth and fashioned it, and himself fixed it fast..."
The earth is flat with heaven above and hell below:
Gen. 11:4 "Come let us build . . . a tower whose top will reach into heaven . . ."
Deut. 13:7 ". . . from the one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth;"
Deut. 28:64 "And the Lord shall scatter thee among all people, from one end of the earth to the other;"
Job 28:24 "For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;"
Psalm 55:15 "Let them go down into hell."
Isaiah 11:12 "He shall . . . gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth."
Daniel 4:10-11 "Daniel saw a tree of great height at the center of the earth ... visible to the earth's farthest bounds."
Matt. 4:8 "... the devil took (Jesus) to a very high mountain, and howed him all of the kingdoms of the world..."
Matt. 11:23 "And you, Capernaum, . . . shall descend into Hell."
Rev. 1:7 "Behold, he is coming with the clouds! Every eye shall see him .."
The earth is at the center of the universe:
Genesis 1:16-17 "And God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. And God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light to the earth."
Joshua 10:12-13 "O sun, stand thou still at Gibeon, and O moon in the valley of Aijalon." So the sun stood still and the moon stopped.
2 Kings 20:11 "He brought the shadow (cast by the sun) on the stairway back ten steps."
Matt. 24:29 "...the stars will fall from the sky..."
