The ancient Hebrews seem to have first become monolators, and over time
developed into monotheists. Worship of one god out of the many came first,
and this later developed into a belief in the existence of one and only one
god. Even the commandment "you shall have no other gods besides me"
indicates monolatry rather than monotheism.
