>Richard Elliott Friedman, of "Who Wrote the Bible" fame, has a new book
>out entitled "The Hidden Book in the Bible." Half of the book is
>Friedman's formulation and translation of the Yahwist ("J") portions of
>the OT; the other half is introductory and critical notes.
Charles sez.... <note 4 dots> The bible is an amalgam, unlike a melted or blended alloy, it is dissimilar materials that never seem to fit. The "J" and the "P" designations are the simplistic, first-order approximation. The "J" Jehovah and the "P" Priestly ingrediants come and go throughout the OT except for Esther (A Zoroastrian document). There are also Northern "Eloist" or el-ohim influences and southern or "Il" influences. We are talking about small tribes of wandering <translate landless> Bedouins where stories, legends, and myths came and went. Cultural borrowings are the rule, not the exception. Anyone who has more than scratched the surface becomes immediately aware of the multitudes of influences on the biblical writers.
