HELEN:
About one third of all Hindus worship the Mother Goddess who is in one form
Durga and in another Kali. I suspect that it is no more offensive than any
other worship. It does include some animal sacrifice, but the followers eat
the meat and actually eat far less meat in total than westerner. Perhaps
you
are confusing the now defunct cult of the Thuggees with Kali worship in
general. This is about as fair as believing all Christians are the same as
the Christian Knights of the Klu Klux Klan.

Ah but Helen you are not judging according to Hindu standards. Kali
worship
is regarded among Hindus as a valid form of worship. Christians who have
glanced (but not studied) Kali worship tend to think that it is barbaric.
But they
of course are judging a misunderstanding of Kali worship according to
Judeo-
Christian standards. My point was that if you are only going to apply the
standards of the society itself to judge the behavior of that society, then
you don't
have much of a basis for morality. Otherwise, why not say that cannibalism
is
perfectly fine so long as it is a cannibalistic society that is engaging in
it?
