RANDY
Yes, I do believe that God caused the prophets to lie. That's not the same
thing as lying.
POOBAH
Ironically, of course, it is the same Christian fundamentalists that hold
this kind of position that pilloried Clinton for his strict legalistic
answers. *Shrug*.
How do you know, Randy, that Jehovah didn't cause any of the authors of the
sundry books comprising the Bible to lie when they were writing them? How do
you know he didn't cause the prelates voting on the composition of the Bible
to say that they believed certain books to be inspired? How do you know he
doesn't cause your preacher to lie to you about various scriptural
interpretations?
He could do all of that, evidently, and not be lying - according to you.
That's the absurdity your position requires. Anything in your religion could
be the result of a lie in that case.
I'll close with the following food for thought. In Ezekiel 20, Ezekiel is
speaking for Jehovah (so I guess he could be lying but his god wouldn't be),
but he says (RSV, emphasis mine), "*because they had not executed my
ordinances*, but had rejected my statutes and profaned my sabbaths, and
their eyes were set on their fathers' idols. *Moreover I gave them statutes
that were not good and ordinances by which they could not have life [2]*;
and I defiled them through their very gifts in making them offer by fire all
their first-born, that I might horrify them; I did it that they might know
that I am Jehovah."
So we have Ezekiel telling us that Jehovah got so mad at his people for not
following his laws, that He actually gave them bad rules to follow. This
sure looks like a lie on ole' Jehovah's part as well, since Jehovah told his
people to obey laws that they weren't good; at the very least it is a breach
of trust. Note as well what he caused to happen to those children he loved
so well, just to prove a point.
How do you know that he hasn't done the same with your sub-sect of the
Christian cult? You clearly are not obeying his old laws. How do you know
that he hasn't caused your leaders to lie to you about what you are really
supposed to do? How do you know he hasn't put a lying spirit in your head to
fool you?
He would still be perfectly good in your opinion, even if he did...
How do you know which of his commands you are really suppose to follow and
which are the result of a lying spirit?
